Except Universities and Polytechnics, there are a number of private colleges in New Zealand. These institutions are called Private Training Establishments (PTE). These education providers are not state-funded and often provide training in specific areas of education or training.

These institutions often specialise in a specific industry or area of study, such as creative arts or tourism and hospitality. Courses are offered at all levels of study, although many PTEs focus on providing hands-on, practical education and primarily offer vocational certificates and diplomas. Some PTEs may specialise in providing education to international students, while others provide courses that offer a pathway to further study at universities in New Zealand.
